Psalm 145:3: Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and His greatness is unsearchable.
The praises in Psalms express gratitude, admiration, and reverence toward God. A heart that produces such expressions reads God’s Word and cannot help but recognize the Lord’s greatness.
God’s creation is great. “For the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse” (Rom. 1:20).
The existence of the world and all that is in it gives us a glimpse of God’s greatness. Consider mountains, oceans, forests, valleys, and all that is in what we call nature. God’s greatness is seen in the very existence of the earth (Psa. 19:1).
God’s power is great. As God asked Abraham and Sarah prior to Isaac’s birth, “Is anything too hard for the LORD?” (Gen. 18:14). God has the ability to do whatever He pleases, as evidenced by His creation of the world.
God’s grace is great. Just as God had the power to give Sarah a child in her old age, God has the power to do whatever He pleases with mankind. Were He to give us what we deserve, we would face eternal condemnation in hell (Rom. 6:23). Yet, because of His love, He wants all of us to be saved (1 Tim. 2:4), and has planned a means by which our salvation is possible (Rom. 5:8).
God’s Son is great. God’s plan of salvation centers on His Son, Jesus Christ. It is a remarkable thing to consider that deity, God the Son, walked this earth as a man. How great is it to know that He was “in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin” (Heb. 4:15). How great is Jesus’ love, which led Him to willingly give His life for us (Eph. 5:2; cf. Matt. 26:53-54). How great is the evidence we have that proves that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God (John 20:30-31).
God’s Word is great. While God the Son came to earth as the living Word (John 1:14), God’s written Word is contained in the Bible. As God’s prophet Isaiah proclaimed and the apostle Peter reiterated, “the Lord’s Word endures forever” (1 Pet. 1:25; cf. Isa. 40:8).
God’s message of salvation has not only survived attacks to end it (cf. Acts 5:28), but thrives in a world that today has the inspired Scripture available in hundreds of languages. The fact that many ignore God’s Word does not take away from its power. God’s Word continues to produce faith and good fruit when it is sown in good and honest hearts (Rom. 10:17; Matt. 13:23).
God’s promises are great. God through His Word promises to forgive the sins of those who submit to His terms for salvation. He promises to answer proper prayer (1 Pet. 3:12). He’s promised to give the righteous an eternal home in heaven (Matt. 25:46).
God’s wisdom is great. He sees all (Heb. 4:13), and His understanding is as far above ours as the heavens are above the earth (Isa. 55:9).
Much more could be said about the greatness of our perfect, almighty God. Much of His greatness is beyond our comprehension. Yet, even a glimpse at these things we have noticed can help us see His greatness. Truly, “Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and His greatness is unsearchable.”
